Mountaineering Training:

With an aim to promote mountain tourism as a safe tourism, NMA has been actively involving in the training activities intended to produce qualified and skilled resources. NMA conducts Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) and Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC) in the month of June i.e. 12 June  and December i.e. 20 December annually.


Annual Training Schedule:

Basic Mountaineering Course
Basic Mountaineering Courseis conducted in June annually starting from 12 June. The training is intended for the mountaineers to  equip them with new techniques and methodology on mountaineering and rescue activities.  The average duration of the training is 40 days with 10 days theory (Kathmandu) and 30 days practical  (Langtang). 

The interested candidates are requested to read the following directions before applying for the course.

For Nepalese Nationals:
The interested Nepali candidates should have the following criteria to apply for the course.

  1. Sport background
  2. Physically and mentally fit
  3. Able to write and speak basic English language
  4. Basic knowledge about mountaineering and trekking
  5. Guide Training (Conducted by Nepal Academy of Tourism & Hotel Management ,NATHM)
  6. Mountain leader course
  7. Introductory Rock Climbing Course, First Aid Course, Basic Mountain Rescue Course, Hill Walking & Mountain Navigation Course Conducted by Nepal Mountaineering Instructors Association (NMIA) & NMA.
  8. Wilderness First Aid Course ( Conducted by NMIA, Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP), Alliance France and Other related organization )
  9. Above 8000 meters Summiteers
  10. Basic Mountaineering Training under Foreign Alpine Association (IFMGA  member country)

The following documents should be attached with the application form(distributed by NMA) while submitting.

  1. Passport size photo- 1 pc
  2. Photocopy of Citizenship Certificate
  3. Recommendation Letter from Trekking Agency registered at NMA
  4. Insurance (To be submitted after selection)

For Foreign Nationals:
NMA accepts also applications from the foreign nationals to attend BMC. They should have the following criteria to apply for the course.

  1. Sport background
  2. Physically and mentally fit
  3. Able to write and speak basic English language
  4. Basic knowledge about mountaineering and trekking

 The following documents should be attached with the application form (distributed by NMA) while submitting.

Training fee:
The cost of per Nepalese student is Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 for BMC and AMC respectively.Training fee for foreign nationals for each training (BMA and AMC) is US $ 3000 and 50% should be deposited for confirmation.

We have special rate for the people of SAARC nations. Training fee for SAARC nationals is US$ 1875 for each training (BMC and AMC) and 50% should be deposited for confirmation.

The remaining amount can be paid at NMA secretariat after the arrival in Kathmandu. The training fee can be paid in Nepalese currency or US dollar or Euro.

Deadline for foreigners and SAAARC nationals to deposit 50% training fee for confirmation:

Important information for foreign and SAARC candidates participating in BMC and AMC:

  1. The foreign candidates will have to stay in the hotel booked by NMA on sharing basis.
  2. NMA manages breakfast with lunch and accommodation for the foreign candidates during the training period in Kathmandu.
  3. SAARC nationals will have to manage their own accommodation and food during the training period in Kathmandu as well as on the route from Kathmandu-Training site-Kahmandu.
  4. Training site refers Manang for BMC and Langtang for AMC.
  5. NMA manages transportation (Kathmandu-Training site-Kathmandu), food and accommodation at training site, porters, national park fee. Insurance documents need to be submitted at the secretariat at the time of final payment.
  6. Candidates are required to manage mountaineering equipments and NMA can assist in buying or hiring the necessary equipments. But NMA is not liable for the cost of equipments whether hired or bought.
  7. The international flight expenses should be managed by the candidates.
  8. The training fee once deposited will not refunded, however, request can be made to NMA for the extension up to one year if the candidates cannot appear in the training for the special reason. Executive Board Committee reserves the right to accept or reject the request.
  9. The candidates will have to sign contract before attending the training class.
