Reporters' Club- 2 July
Press conference was organized by our institutional members namely Everest Summiteers Association, Nepal Mountaineering Instructors' Association, Gorkha Tourism and UNITRAV on 2 July 2007 to clarify issue related with NMA raised recently by some newspapers and media. In the press meet, NMA President Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa, along with the executive board members shed light on various questions raised by the media persons. The press statement issued by NMA was also read out to make clear on concerned subject. We highly appreciate and thank our institutional members for taking this initiative.

Tourism Minister visit to NMA Secretariat- 13 July
Hon'ble Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prithvi Subba Gurung visited NMA-Secretariat on 13 July 2007. NMA President Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa welcomed him in NMA premises. Mr. Zimba Zangbu Sherpa- Ist Vice President, Mr. Bhumi Lal Lama- IInd Vice President and Mr. Deebas Bikram Shah, General Secretary briefed him about International Mountain Museum, International Mountaineers' Memorial Park, training and other major activities of NMA. Likewise, NMA Treasurer Mr. Ang Kaji Sherpa shed light on income-expenditure of our association. There were various exchange of ideas among the authority body and executive body regarding mountaineering activities through out our region and our nation. Hon'ble Minister appraised the activities of NMA and assured the full cooperation from the ministry in the future for the promotion of mountain tourism in Nepal.

HAT-J Beijing /China- 23 July
NMA President Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa along with other executive board members were present at NMA premises on 23 July 2007 to see off the HAT-J participants for Youth Cross Cultural Mountain Conservation Meet 2007, Beijing/ China. The meet was organized by Chinese Mountaineering Association (CMA) from 23-29 July 2007. Ms. Kamini L Sherpa, our Executive Board Member led the team, which comprises of the following three students.

  • Mr. Ranjeet Bhandari- Caspian Valley Higher Secondary School

  • Mr. Ananta Adhikari- Capital College & Research Center

  • Mr. Nirish Pyalurel- National School of Sciences at Kathmandu

We wish them all the best and hope this would be the great learning adventure for them.

Traffic management in Thamel-25 July
Thamel Tourism Development Council in a press statement mentioned about its movement to manage traffic in Thamel - the tourism hub in Kathmandu for the smooth management of vehicles in the area. The council has requested local clubs, house owners, shopkeepers, hoteliers etc for cooperation for the successful implementation of its announcement.

Farewell to NMA staff- 31 July
Administrative Officer (Technical) of International Mountain Museum (IMM) Mr. Nabin Ghimire was given farewell at NMA Secretariat on 31 July. NMA President Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa thanked him for his worthwhile contribution towards the development of IMM and wished him all the best in life.

Introduction of Mountaineering Gears
This is regular column of e-News to introduce mountain gears to the readers.

Ice Screw:
A screw used to protect a climb over steep ice or for setting up a crevasse rescue system. The strongest and most reliable type of ice screws are the modern tubular ice screws which range in lengths from 10 to 23 cm. The approximate strength rating on a modern tubular ice screw is around 10Kn.
