New world record on 14 eight thousand meter peaks- 2 May

Chhang Dawa Sherpa climbed Mt. Shisapangma on 2 May and becoae the 2nd Nepali to climb all the fourteen mountains above 8000m. His brother Mingma Sherpa is the first Nepali to complete expedition on all the fourteen mountains above 8000m, hence, they have created the record of the first two brothers of the world to climb all 14 eight thousand meter peaks.

Aleksle Bolotov (50), a Russian died on Everest - 15 May

A Russian climber names Aleksle Bolotov was crushed to death by a falling boulder while he was undergoing rock climbing training in the Everest region on Wednesday morning. He was killed after he was hit by a boulder rolling down the hill. He was heading to Mt Lhotse's base camp from the Everest base camp to partake in the rock-climbing training this morning. Mr. Bolotov was a member of the International Everest South West Expedition team that is on the expedition of Mt Lhotse.

Two octogenarians on the road to create world record- 17 May

In the race of creating history of the oldest climber of Mt. Everest, 80-year-old named Yuichiro Miura of Japan ascended Everest on 23 May and thus became the oldest climber. Earlier, the 81 year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan of Nepal was the oldest climber and could not ascend Everest this year due to his health problem.

New records on Mt. Everest- 19 May

Mr. David Liano Gonzalez, 33 years from Mexico became the first person to double summit Mt. Everest in one climbing season. Here is a brief description of David's summit detail and his travel from South side to North Side.

  • 11th May 2013 – Summit of Mt. Everest from South Side with Climbing Sherpa Samden Bhote at 08:05 am Nepal Time
  • 12th May 2013 – Camp II – Base Camp – Kathmandu by Helicopter
  • 13th May 2013 – Kathmandu – Friendship Bridge (Boarder of Nepal and China) – Everest North Side Base Camp (5200m)
  • 14th May 2013 – Base Camp – Advance Base Camp (6400m)
  • 15th May 2013- Rest Day
  • 16th May 19 2013 – North Col (7100m)
  • 17th May 2013 – Camp II (7700m)
  • 18th May 2013 – Camp III (8300m)
  • 19th May 2013 – Summit of Mt. Everest from North Side at 04:35 am Nepal Time with Climbing Sirdar Mingma Sherpa

Similarly Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa of Khumjung, Solukhumbu became the first Nepali Medical Doctor to summit Mt. Everest. Dr. Namgyal summited Mt. Everest on 19th May 2013 at 07:30 AM with Nawang Kalden Sherpa.

In the spring season of 2013 till 20 May, 234 successful summits were recorded on Mt. Everest and 4 deaths during the ascending of Everest.

Joint Nepal-Indo Everest Expedition- 20 May

The Joint team of Nepal-Indo Everest Expedition successfully ascended Mt. Everest on 20 May 2013. The Nepalese Army team was led by Major Sunil Singh Rathour and Major Ranver Singh Jamwal led the Indian Army team. The team also managed to collect 4010 kgs of garbage from the mountains, which were handed over to Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC).

Nepal investigating 'illegal' Everest broadcast- 21 May

Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has decided to investigate British mountaineer's Daniel Hughes interview with the BBC on his smart phone from the top of Mount Everest. As per the statement of the ministry, they have not received permission from the ministry for the broadcast and it is an illegal to conduct such activity without the approval from the ministry. The statement further added that even the tourism ministry has to seek permission from the communication ministry to film, broadcast or conduct media related events on Everest.

Mt. Everest Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary ascended the highest mountains on earth- Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953. On the occasion of completion of sixty years of the first ascent of Mt. Everest on 29 May 2013, Everest Diamond Jubilee Celebration was organized with different programs in Kathmandu and Khumbu from 27-29 May 2013. Government of Nepal formed the Main Organizing Committee under the chairmanship of Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation with the representatives of different travel related organizations as members of the committee.

Mt. Everest Diamond Jubilee Secretariat organized Sagarmatha Diamond Jubilee Conference and 6th Sagarmatha Tourism Coordination Forum on 26 & 27 May 2013 at Khumjung, Solukhumbu. Dr Lhakpa Norbu Sherpa was appointed as coordinator for the program. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Sir Edmund Hillary Memorial park at the eastern end of Khumjung village. International guests like Jan Henderson, Honorary Member of UIAA Ang Tshering Sherpa, Hilary Carlile, Gia Tortladge- President of International Mountaineers Association, UIAA President Frits Vrijland, Apa Sherpa and other climbers participated in the conference.

A commemorative postal cover of Mt. Everest Diamond Jubilee Celebration and International Mountain Museum was cancelled on 28 May in the special program organized to mark the event. On the same program, chief guest Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ram Kumar Shrestha also distributed International Sagarmatha Ward to Chang Dawa Sherpa. Mr. Sherpa is the second Nepali to complete the ascent of all the fourteen peaks above 8000m. Similarly, Tenzing-Hillary Award was distributed to Everest Summiteers' Association.

29 May 2013

On the morning of 29 May, the morning procession started from Nepal Tourism Board and ended at Basantapur Durbar Square. International famous summiteers Reinhold Messner, Wolfgang Nairz, grandson of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa- Tashi Tenzing Sherpa, niece of Edmund Hillary- Amilie Hilary, Carlile Hillary, Snow leopard Ang Rita Sherpa and other Everest summiteers participated in the morning program. Kathmandu Metropolitan City offered them civic reception at Basantapur Durbar Square. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ram Kumar Shrestha, Secretary Sushil Ghimire, representatives of different organizations were also present in the program.

British Embassy also organized a reception in honor of national and international Everest summiteers in its premises to mark the historic occasion.

In the afternoon of 29 May, a special program was organized at Narayanhit Palace Museum in the presence of chairman of Council of Minister Khil Raj Regmi as the chief guest. All the national and international Everest summiteers, who have come all the way to participate in the program, are present in the program. Letter of appreciation and medals were distributed to the record holder Everest summiteers and Nepalese women summiteers. Reinhold Messner- the first person to ascend all the peaks above 8000m without oxygen, Min Bahadur Sherchan- the oldest climber, Mingmar Sherpa- the first Nepali to climb all fourteen peaks above 8000 m, David Liano- the first person to climb Everest from south and north in one season were present in the program. Other record holder climbers like Churim Sherpa, Kame Sherpa, climbing members of Seven Summit were also present on the occasion. The chief guest also released the special publication of Nepal Parbat, which was published by Nepal Mountaineering Association on the occasion of Everest Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Different cultural programs depicting the cultural values of Nepal's Himalayan regions were also performed during the program. The program, which started with the welcome speech by Ram Kumar Shrestha- Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation ended after the vote of thanks by Sushil Ghimire- Secretary of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Everest 2013: Summits 522 Deaths 8- 31 May

In 2013, it is recorded that Everest was ascended by 522 different summiteers and 8 people died during the expedition.
