27th Advance Mountaineering Course starts- 5 Jan

NMA's annual training program 27th Advance Mountaineering Course starts from 5 Jan 2017 at Godawari Alumni Association (GAA), -Thamel . The training will be organized in Kathmandu and Langtang will conclude on 11 Feb 2018.

Mountain Leader Course – Component II starts

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) organized ice breaking program for Mountain Leader Course on 8th January 2018 at the NMA Golden Jubilee Building, Naxal. There are total 15 students participating in this 14-day course and they will be heading to Solu- Pk area on 10th January 2018 for the remaining part of the training. NMA General Secretary- Mr. Kul Bahadur Gurung, Treasurer- Mr. Sudarshan Neupane along with other board members attended the opening program of the course. This course starting from today will conclude on 18th January 2018.

One of the main objectives of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is to promote mountain tourism as a safe tourism; therefore it has been actively involving in the training activities to produce qualified and skilled resources for the mountain tourism. As part of its objectives to give continuation in the production of skilled human resources for mountaineering, NMA's following regular training programs started:

1. 26th Advance Mountaineering Training

26th Advance Training organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) started from 31st December 2017 to 11th February 2018 in Kathmandu & Langtang. The participants who have completed Basic Training till 2016 are eligible to participate in this training. NMA Executive Board Member Mr. Tul Singh Gurung has been appointed as the Convener of the training. Following are the name lists of the other instructors and participants of this year's training:

1. Mountain Leader Course – Component II

The Mountain Leader Course - Component II started from 5th January 2018 to 18th January 2018 this year by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) at Kathmandu & Solukhumbu, Pike area. Mr. Tul Singh Gurung is appointed as the convener of this training program. The first component of this training was conducted from 2nd July 2017 to 16th July 2017. 2. High Mountain Rescue Training (HMRT)

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in association with Nepal Mountaineering Instructors' Association (NMIA) has organized High Mountain Rescue Training (HMRT) The training conducted in Kathmandu & Langtang started from 5th January 2018 to 22nd January 2018. All the instructors including the participants left for Langtang on 5th January 2018 from Kathmandu. The other instructors & participants of this training as follows:

Departure of instructors and trainees of Advance Mountaineering Course

The instructors and trainees of 26th Advance Mountaineering Course left for Langtang 20 Jan 2018. NMA Secretary Tikaram Gurung and Treasurer Sudershan Neupane along with board members saw them off in the special program organized at NMA secretariat.

Passing away of Elizabeth Hawley- 26 Jan

Ms. Elizabeth Hawley passed away today 26 Jan 2018 at 2:49 am at CIWEC Hospital, Kathmandu.
Late Ms. Hawley (born November 9, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American former journalist and chronicler of Himalayan expeditions. She travelled to Nepal in September 1960 and never left.
She was educated at the University of Michigan and moved to Nepal after giving up her job as a researcher for Fortune magazine in New York.
While she has never climbed a mountain herself, Hawley has been the best-known chronicler of Himalayan expeditions for over four decades. She is respected by the international mountaineering community because of her complete and accurate records, despite their unofficial status. Her records are summarized in a database used in several analyses of success and death rates for climbers in the Nepal Himalaya.

Park Young Seok Climbing Competition

Nepal Mountaineering Association in coordination Park Young Seok Foundation organized 5th Park Young Seok Climbing Competition to promote sport climbing activities in Nepal. This competition was held on 26th and 27th January 2018 at Himalayan Climbing and Mountaineering School (HCMS) Dhumbarai. The chief guest for the program was Mr. Ishwar Pokhare, Hon'ble Member of Parliament and Formar Deputy Prime Minister, Delegates from Korea, NMA Executive Board members, NMA Advisor, and NMA Staff were present during the program. There are total 28 participants during this competition and among them there were 7 female and 21 male participants. Result of this Competition is as follow:

Funeral of Elizabeth Hawley

Funeral of Late Elizabeth Hawley, Chronicler of Himalayas was done on 28 Jan 2018 from her residence at Dillibazaar, Kathmandu. NMA Executive Boar led by its President Santa Bir Lama offered khada to her before the funeral starts. Late Hawley has been living in Nepal since 1960 and died at the age of 94 at the hospital on 26 Jan 2018.

In recognition of her support and contribution to the development of Nepal's mountain tourism, NMA awarded her with Dr. Harka Gurung Mountaineering Award in 2006.
