17th Dr. Harka Gurung Day celebrated
September 24, 2023

The 17th Dr. Harka Gurung Day was observed with a formal event in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), in collaboration with New Era Kathmandu and Tamu Boudha Sewa Sammittee, jointly hosted a program at the latter's office in Anamnagar. During this event, various aspects of Dr. Gurung's life were discussed.

Sociologist Dr. Ganesh Gurung took center stage as the sole presenter at the event. He shed light on the lesser-known facets of the late Dr. Gurung's life. Dr. Ganesh Gurung remarked, "While many of us are acquainted with Dr. Gurung's life story, it was his data-driven and truth-based arguments that truly defined his influential personality. This is a profound lesson we can draw from his life."

Dr. Gurung, a distinguished geographer, Nepal's first tourism minister, writer, and multi-talented individual, left a significant mark on Nepal's tourism sector, migration issues, and cross-border relations with India. Dr. Ganesh Gurung, who had closely collaborated with Dr. Harka Gurung, expressed the void left by his absence in addressing Nepal's unresolved federalism-related problems.

‘‘Except for Gandaki Province, all other provincial governments had their capital cities in the Madhes region, and there were still ongoing issues concerning the naming and selection of these capitals,’’ he opined. Dr. Ganesh Gurung believed that the late Dr. Gurung could have played a pivotal role in resolving such matters.

The participants at the event urged relevant organizations to undertake the task of collecting, reprinting, and making readily accessible Dr. Gurung's extensive collection of over 600 books and articles.

Nepal Mountaineering Association, Tamu Boudha Sewa Sammittee, and New Era Kathmandu have been partnering in commemorating the memory of the late Dr. Harka Gurung. Dr. Harka Gurung had served as the chief advisor to all three of these organizing entities.
