Celebration of 6th International Mountain Festival – 2019

On the occasion of International Mountain Day 2019 Nepal Mountaineering Association organized 6th International Mountain Festival on 11th December 2019 at Kathmandu with the theme of "Mountains Matter for Youth"

Morning Procession

Nepal Mountaineering Association organized Tenzing Hillary Walk on 11 December 2019 from Basantapur to NMA Secretariat. Government official, climbers, tourism related official, NMA General Member, NMA Executive Board Members and different cultural groups were present in procession.  Director General of Department of Tourism Mr. Dandu Raj Ghimire and NMA President Mr. Santa Bir Lama jointly inaugurated the program by holding the 6th International Mountain Festival. During the procession Mr. Kamirita Sherpa, Mr. Sanu Sherpa, Mr. Mingma Sherpa, Mr. Chhang Dawa Sherpa and Mr. Mingma Gabyu Sherpa were honored in the procession. The procession was followed by different culture group with their traditional dress and music. This procession was concluded at NMA secretariat.

Interaction Program

On this occasion NMA also organized interaction program on "Mountains matter for youth challenges in expedition" to the climbers. Mr. Phurba Namgel Sherpa, representative from Nepal National Mountain Guide Association presented on the topic of the day "Mountains matter for youth challenges in expedition".


NMA organized the closing program on the same day at Kathmandu Marriott Hotel. Honb'le Minister for Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Mr. Yogesh Bhattarai was the chief guest for the program. The program observed one minute silence in the memory of the mountaineers deceased on mountains. The following record holder mountaineers were felicitated on the same occasion.

After the felicitation program, the chief guest also distributed Sir Edmund Hillary Legacy Award to Pakistani national Mr. Didar Ali for his outstanding contribution in the field of mountain and mountaineering. During the program, representatives from NABIL Bank made announcement of the distribution of monthly scholarship to the children of deceased mountaineers. Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Mr. Kedar Adhikari, high level government officials, diplomatic mission, and representatives from travel related organizations were also present in the same program.
