Photographs from the historic 1979 Annapurna South Expedition by Polish climbers are now on display at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Honorable Krishna Prasad Dhital, Speaker of Gandaki Province.
The exhibition features 25 images capturing moments from this historic expedition. Two climbers from the team were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
The six-member Polish team arrived in Pokhara in the same Jelcz truck used during their 1979 journey, which spanned ten countries and covered a distance of 10,600 kilometers. They retraced the route taken to reach Nepal for the expedition back in 1979.
Forty-five years ago, the Polish team traveled to Nepal via Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and India, transporting both climbers and expedition equipment. They utilized the same truck, route, and method for their return to Nepal for this exhibition.
The decorated Jelcz truck will be stationed at the museum until December of this year, welcoming visitors. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) anticipates that both the truck and the photographs will attract considerable interest during the 9th Mountain Festival, originally scheduled for this December.
